Just a friendly reminder that HRPC is holding the December meeting on
Tuesday, December 14 at 7:00 pm at the Highlands Ranch Library.

The evening will be a fun “ask the photographer” session with Jordan
McCullough on topics including wedding coverage, architecture imagery, and
abstraction techniques. Be sure to think over these topics and bring your
questions!

If over the recent holidays you’ve had time to play with this month’s photo
assignment, please bring your best images for “Abstraction & Patterns” for a
fun group evaluation of imagery, best approaches to using photography as an
abstract art form, and how concepts can be communicated through shape and
color.

Should you have any questions, please email feedback@hrphotoclub.com.

With all of the amazing photographs seen during November’s Show and Tell event for the club meeting, and the fantastic direction a lot of members took towards abstracting interesting photographic elements, it is only logical to make this coming month’s assignment a derivative of this inspiration.

December Monthly Assignment : Abstractions & Patterns

Rather than looking at the “big picture” we often find ourselves seeking in our images, let’s take an entirely different perspective on our favorite subjects. Whether out capturing landscapes or buildings, flowers or still lights, evaluate the scene for an aspect that gleams with abstract beauty and photographic it. This might consist of a pattern a shadow is casting, the sparkling effect of holiday lights, or merely getting much closer than usual to the subject.

The objective of this month’s assignment is to consider how a photograph can still capture a image that showcases composition, lighting, and beauty, but without the outright goal of knowing what the original subject matter was that formed the image.

Be creative, explore various angles, and subjects, and most of all, have fun!

As mentioned in the last two HRPC meetings, I’m excited to announce that the Highlands Ranch library has been generous enough to provide us with the month of January for club members to showcase their photography.

In order to get a solid count of submissions, I need everyone who wishes to have their photography featured in the library email me confirmation. This will allow me to get a final count for the number of contributions each member can make.

Please email the following information if you wish to have your photography included in the January showcase. This will allow me to get in touch before and after the showcase and ensure all photography is hung, as well as picked up. Additionally, if you have a theme in mind for your images, please include that, as we may include the club members’ imagery in various clusters throughout the library walls.

- First and last name
- Telephone number
- Theme of imagery

Please email this information to: feedback@hrphotoclub.com

Get ready for some tasty photography this month, as the October assignment is “food.”

This assignment has many applications for learning to carefully observe the light on a subject, what mood is portrayed, and the appealing qualities of the final photograph.

Any lighting can be used to illuminate the subject–sunlight, soft window light, a desk lamp–whatever is accessible.

Tips and Tricks

The next time you flip through a magazine or grocery store brochure, closely examine food photos that grab attention and have that appetite-inspiring look. Here are a few questions to ask yourself when reviewing food photos:

What makes the image so appealing?

Is the lighting on the subject from the side? From the back? From the front?

Are there hard shadows or soft shadows across the subject?

What type of lighting is used? Bright dramatic sources or more low-key?

Suggestions

Keep lighting simple. One or two sources should be more than sufficient

Fruits and vegetables look great on high-key, brightly lit scenes

Desserts, such as cakes, look great under soft, broad lighting with long shadows

Most of all, have fun and enjoy the assignment.
