Highlands Ranch Photo Club Meeting
January 9, 2007

DeDe welcomed everyone to the meeting. Dues for this year will be $25. The higher dues for this year will allow us to purchase a projector. We already have $539 in our treasury which can be used for this purpose. Dale is investigating the cost of a projector, which is expected to cost about $800.

DeDe introduced co-chair Richard who sends reminder e-mails about upcoming meetings to everyone on the photo club list. Debra will be our treasurer this year, while Nancy formats and posts up to three photos per member at the club website. Anyone wishing to post their photos should bring their pictures on a CD to the club meeting.

Photo club meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at the Highlands Ranch library.

Digital Natural Media
A Presentation by Steven Friedman

Steven Friedman presented and explained his method for producing "painterly" artwork. Although he starts with a photograph, the techniques he uses totally transform the original image into artwork resembling traditional methods such as charcoal, pastels, oil paint, water color and so on.

Friedman's goal is to end up with a piece of artwork which has an appearance indistinguishable from traditional artistic mediums. He calls this technique "Digital Natural Media."

To accomplish this task, Friedman uses several computer programs, but he stressed that you do not need to be a computer "nerd" to achieve these effects. The tools he uses include a pressure sensitive stylus and tablet, Corel Painter and Microsoft Digital Image Pro.

Friedman demonstrated his techniques using a photograph of a ballet dancer which he transformed into an image with the appearance of a painting.

He offers classes where interested parties can learn his techniques in more depth. The next one will likely be held February 11. He also has four DVDs available for purchase showing his methods in great detail.

Show and Tell

Several members shared photographs from recent outings. Brad brought two photographs of bristlecone pines from Mount Evans. Richard brought a night photo of the Colorado capitol building. Mark showed a butterfly. Nancy brought photos from Washington, D.C.

Dale reminded club members that Lone Tree will have a photographic art show and sale this spring. The deadline for entries is March 1. Categories will be color, monochrome, special effectscolor and special effects monochrome. Details and application forms will soon be available at www.cityoflonetree.com/photographyclub.

Notes for Future Meetings:

Our meeting February 13, 2007, will feature a presentation on extreme lighting by Richard Bruner. Rita and Charlie Summers from Wild Images will make a presentation at the March 2007 meeting. Their specialty is photographing wild horses. April's meeting will be show-and-tell with Meg Dalton providing comments and suggestions.
