Highlands Ranch Photo Club Meeting of March 14, 2006

DeDe Williams welcomed everyone to our "Show and Tell" meeting, including several first-time attendees. Guests are always welcome. Anyone who decides to be a regular attendee is asked to pay $10 in annual dues.

She noted that the library is currently displaying photographs by Ken Worley. Photography displays hang for a month at a time and are arranged through the reference desk. Submissions are reviewed by a panel in November or December. Joycelyn will inquire about the possibility of a club show in the future.

Club members were informed about our website, www.hrphotoclub.com, which is now up and running. Members are invited to submit photos for posting at the website. Submitted photos should be suitable for all audiences and limited to three per member. Specific details will be e-mailed to club members.

DeDe then introduced our guest judge, Meg Dalton. She thanked Meg for being our guest speaker last month, when Meg talked about what judges look for in photos. Most club members brought several photos to share covering a variety of subjects.

Meg and club members viewed each photo and pointed out good points and possible areas for improvement. Each photographer talked about the photo being presented, how it was taken, and what they liked and disliked about the photo.

Here are some areas of discussion:

  • Sharp focus
  • Examples of rules being successfully broken
  • Ways cropping might improve some photos
  • Amputation (cutting something off)
  • Sky to ground ratio and horizon
  • Effectiveness of shapes and patterns
  • Effectiveness of lines and triangles
  • Repetition of elements like color or shape
  • Pictures that tell a story or make you ask questions
  • Placement of light and time of day
  • Interesting perspective, such as shooting low to the ground
  • Complementary colors like purple and yellow
  • Strong lines

DeDe reviewed a new book called "The Photoshop Elements 4 Book" by Scott Kelby which she highly recommended for anyone using Photoshop Elements. It is available through Amazon.com or bookstores.

Lonetree Photo Club has invited us to participate in any of their field trips if we would like to do so. They are held weekly.

Next month's meeting will be at the Highlands Ranch Library on Tuesday, April 11. Our speaker will be John Yamamoto from Englewood Camera. He has a background as a cinematographer and professional photographer. Everyone is welcome to attend.
