Highlands Ranch Photo Club Meeting
June 10, 2008

Debbie welcomed everyone to the meeting. She noted that the July meeting will be a show-and-tell session where everyone should bring their photos to share. Our photo club meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Highlands Ranch Library.

Zachary Malham, a previous photo club presenter, will be the focus of a one-person show on drive-in movie theatres at the photographer's gallery located in Cherry Creek North, 2426 E. 3rd Ave. The opening night will be September 5, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. He will be the featured artist for September 2008.

Don Mammoser
Favorite Photography Locations for Colorado,
the Country and the World

This month's presenter was Don Mammoser. For the past 13 years he has made his living from photography-related work, including calendars, magazine articles and photographs, postcards, and two books. He teaches classes at Arapahoe Community College and conducts workshops and photography trips as well. His Web site has more information about his books and workshops: http://www.donmammoserphoto.com/donmammoserphoto.com/Home.html

We were treated to a fast and furious review of Mammoser's favorite photography locations for nature and wildlife photography. Starting with Colorado, he informed us that the 2008 wildflower season should be a great one because of all the snow in the mountains this past winter. The information he shared is available in his books, "The photographer's guide to the Colorado Rockies" and "Wildflowers of Colorado: Field guide."

Don offered some tips for shooting outdoors. A cloudy day works best for wildflower photography. On a sunny day, an umbrella can be used to provide a shadow. He listed his five favorite Colorado flowers: columbine, fairy slipper, alpine sunflower, paintbrush and giant evening star.

Don continued his photo tour with favorite scenic locations around the United States. He encouraged us to go to the iconic locations. There is a reason they have become icons -- it's because they are so beautiful. He went on to share some out-of-the-way favorites in the United States. These included Havasu Falls; Capital Reef National Park; Kawai, Hawaii; Metlaco Falls on the Columbia River Gorge and the slot canyons in Arizona. Favorite areas for wildlife in America included the Everglades in Florida, Yellowstone National Park for big mammals, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico and South Texas. He finished up with stories and photos from five favorite places around the world.

Mammoser concluded by answering questions from photo club members. We thank him very much for an informative and enjoyable presentation.
