Highlands Ranch Photo Club Meeting of September 12, 2006
September Meeting -- Open Session
DeDe welcomed everyone to the meeting. She announced that the October 10, 2006, meeting speaker will be Chuck Dippold on architectural photos. On November 14, 2006, we will be featuring Colorado nature photographer John Fielder and local author Claudia McAdam. McAdam's recent children's book was illustrated with photographs by John Fielder.
DeDe is looking for ideas for topics and presenters for the 2007 photo club meetings. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.
The September program was a "show-and-tell" session with club members bringing recent photos and sharing tips.
- Richard showed twilight photos of Seattle. He used a tripod and experimented with different times of day. He liked the twilight time of day the best. He also shared photos from Deception Pass and Hurricane Ridge in Washington state.
- DeDe mentioned that Wolf Camera has brand new equipment which prints beautifully colored poster-size prints. She thought the 18 x 20 size was about $18.95.
- Susan brought several nature photographs in frames which she hopes to sell at the upcoming craft sale at Eastridge. One was of a penstemon lighted from the side. Another showed a moose mother and baby from Rocky Mountain National Park. A third shot was a fall scene taken at Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.
- Meredith brought two photos she had taken of a water lily. One was a closeup using a macro setting. She took both at Lutheran Hospital. She recommended that location for nature photography including turtles and snakes.
- Craig brought nature photos from recent trips to St. Mary's Glacier and Mt. Evans. Many of his shots were done both in color and in black and white. He told the group that he liked using a red filter setting on his digital camera when shooting black and white because it brings up the cloud contrast better. He also showed some shots using a "lens baby" which softens the edges of the photograph. His photo subjects included mountains, tundra, clouds, wildlife and bristlecone pines.
- Nancy showed a closeup of a mule face taken at Littleton Historical Museum. She recommended the museum for old-time farm and nature photography. She also showed a photo of a yellow coneflower with a red bug taken at a recent Photo Club outing to the Platte River. She also showed a yellow swallowtail butterfly on pink milkweed.
- Terry brought a tree outlined in a red sunrise as well as a maple tree in fall color from Williamsburg, Virginia. She also showed a number of excellent fireworks photos taken using the "fireworks" setting on her digital camera.
- Dave brought photos he took at Mount Rushmore and at the nearby Crazy Horse monument which has been in progress for many years. In some of the photos he used archways to "frame" the subjects in interesting ways. He also had photographs of a lake, a fisherman and a field of sunflowers.
- Chuck brought photos showing interesting architectural details. He had taken some photos at St. Elmo (a ghost town) and some at Cripple Creek City Hall. He explained how he had "Photoshopped" some doors from one building to cover up plywood in one photo. He stated that he does much of his work at home on the computer, where he likes to crop photos to show the most interesting architectural details, shapes and lines.
Notes for Next Meeting:
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 9, 2006, at 7:00 p.m. in the Highlands Ranch Library. Chuck Dippold will speak on architectural photography.
